E.J.Blackley was established in 1967 by Edward James Blackley in the old Harmer foundry premises in Luton, Bedfordshire, England. Continued growth and lack of expansion possibilities necessitated a move to larger premises and the whole business was moved to Broome, Suffolk in 1980, where a 1200 sq.ft. Barn built from locally mined flint nodules- previously the premises of the Crowfoot Brewery Company - was situated at the rear of a Georgian Farmhouse . This provided the opportunity to house the foundry and machine shop in different departments, but under the same roof, also leaving a separate workshop for the sole purpose of antique weapon restoration. At this time , son Kevin - who had joined the firm some five years previously- became a partner and the business traded as E.J. Blackley and Son. The business continued in these well equipped premises for a further twenty years, until once again the issue of insufficient floor space became apparent- due to the continued installation of machinery - much of it now becoming more specialist, to suit the many different areas of industry to which we had become associated. In 2001 new premises of 3,000 sq.ft were secured at Beccles, [LINK TO WORKSHOP FOUNDRY PAGE] however due to the work load at the time, it was clear that a very carefully orchestrated changeover was implemented so as to cause as little disruption to the business as possible. Naturally such a task could not be undertaken trouble free - two years on, machinery was still being installed, as during this period much was the need to continue with restoration work entrusted to us by our customers, along with the need to keep our castings stock as plentiful as possible.
